Local SEO: How to Show Up When Customers Search Near You

IJP Media · · 2 min read

When someone searches “[your service] near me,” do you show up? For local businesses, that question is worth real money. Local SEO is how you make sure the answer is yes — and it’s one of the most winnable forms of marketing for a small business.

Here’s how it works and where to start.

What local SEO actually is

Local SEO is the practice of optimizing your online presence so you appear when people in your area search for what you offer. It covers two main areas:

  • The map pack — the box of business listings with the map that shows at the top of local searches.
  • Local organic results — the regular blue-link results, ranked with local intent in mind.

Showing up in both is the goal.

1. Claim and optimize your Google Business Profile

This is the single most important step, and it’s free. Your Google Business Profile is what feeds the map pack. Make sure you:

  • Claim and verify your listing
  • Fill out every field — hours, services, service area, description
  • Add real photos
  • Keep your name, address, and phone number accurate and consistent

A complete, active profile dramatically improves your odds of showing up.

2. Get reviews — and respond to them

Reviews are one of the strongest local ranking signals, and they’re what convince a searcher to choose you over the listing next to yours. Ask happy customers to leave a Google review, make it easy with a direct link, and reply to the ones you get. A steady stream of genuine 5-star reviews is gold.

3. Keep your information consistent everywhere

Your business name, address, and phone number (your “NAP”) should match exactly across your website, Google, and any directory you’re listed in. Inconsistencies confuse search engines and quietly hurt your rankings.

4. Make your website locally relevant

Your site should make it obvious where you operate. That means mentioning your city and service areas naturally in your content, having a clear contact page with your location, and making sure the whole thing loads fast and works on mobile. (A well-built site is the foundation everything else sits on.)

5. Build local relevance over time

Location-specific pages, helpful local content, and links from other local businesses or organizations all reinforce that you’re an established part of your community. This is the slow, compounding part — and it’s where a lot of competitors give up.

The payoff

Local SEO levels the playing field. You don’t need the biggest budget to outrank a national chain in your own backyard — you need to do the fundamentals consistently. The businesses that show up are usually just the ones that put in the work.
